MURAT SÂLİM TOKAÇ
on “Spiritual Evolution of Man and Music”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Sâlim Tokaç, a prominent ney and tanbur performer of our day, was born in 1969 in Kırıkkale. He is originally from Ünye. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Ondokuz Mayıs University in 1992, and completed his PhD in Microbiology in the same faculty. In 1991, he was appointed as a ney and tanbur artist to Samsun State Classical Turkish Music Choir of the Ministry of Culture, and in 2004, as the conductor of the same choir.
In 1998, he was awarded the "Musician of the Year" prize by the KASIAD (Black Sea Industrialists and Businessmen Association) in Samsun.
In 2007, he was appointed as founding art director to the Istanbul State Ensemble of Turkish Music Research and Performance established in Istanbul. In addition to his concerts with an ensemble, he gave solo recitals inside the country, and gave concerts, ney and tanbur seminars and conferences, individually or with various ensembles in all Europe, North Africa, USA, Canada, Japan, S. Korea, China, Hong-Kong, S. Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Taiwan, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Tatarstan, Armenia, Australia and Russia.
He performed in and was also the art director of seventy (70) album CDs, four (4) of them solo.
In 2014, he earned the associate professor degree in the field of Turkish Music interpretation and musicology. Assoc. Prof. Murat Sâlim Tokaç has many articles published in journals. He is currently the General Director of Fine Arts in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Republic of Turkey, and also the Art Director of Istanbul State Ensemble of Turkish Music Research and Performance.
