In order for “Geçki” (transitions between two sequential music melody) to be harmonious and fluent, it is necessary to present the melody, the çeşni (the taste  and harmony in the melody) and the sound directly or with the help of auxiliary melodies, so that the melody invites the next melody without any disturbance.

Only in this way, the present “Makam” leaves the stage to the following one without any mismatch between the lyrics.

Erol Deran

We can say that there is something else in this book; a different and spontaneous approach arises. You will notice this as you listen to the “seyir” (the course of a melody throughout a song) and as you skim over the intervals of the notes. The book, written by one of today’s doyen artists Erol Deran, is based on the “ geçki seyirleri” (course of transitions between sequential melodies), which have been organized in a special order, particularly using the experience and manners of the author.

The substantial and spiritual value of such a service, which is prepared by a musician for future generations with a sense of responsibility, cannot be described. As members of OMAR, we are proud of being involved for better understanding of this work which was prepared for the International Summer School IV.

As a person who has a chance to be in the preparation stage of the book “Makamdan Makame Geçki Örnekleri”, which will open new horizons especially to the saz performers, I woud like to mention that it is not only a book of texts and notes but a so called “an interactive book” in  today’s terminology.

It is fascinating that Erol Deran has embedded his distinctive music sentences into a minute-long pieces.

Without a doubt, as musicians, what we learn from this book will open new doors for us.
